Math
I believe that every student learns differently, so I tailor each lesson to match the student's needs and learning style. I incorporate a mix of different problem types, challenging students every session, and use interactive and clear explanations to make learning math more intuitive. My goal with every students is to form confidence and deep understanding, not just competence.
Lesson Structure
After the first lesson, which is primarily taken up by a diagnostic test session, I use the following structure in my lessons:
5-10 minutes: Warm Up - mental math, reviewing homework
10-15 minutes: Mini-lesson - small topic that helps ease into main lesson topic
15-20 minutes: Main lesson - new concept or targeted practice
5-10 minutes: Additional / challenge practice problems
(if time): Review game - e.g. Jeopardy with practice problems
Last couple minutes: Wrap up and assign light homework
Viola / Violin
When it comes to teaching music, I believe that it is crucial to prioritize making practice and lessons rewarding rather than intimidating. I aim to make each lesson educational but not stressful, and encourage practicing to solidify skills. In lessons, I focus on building proper basic technique and developing new skills as the student progresses. Ultimately, I want students to experience joy from their instrument and grow in their ability to play as well.
Lesson Structure
Although I tailor each lesson to the individual student's needs (i.e. audition material, school orchestra pieces, etc.), I try to promote a good structure that I emphasize in students' independent practice as well.
The first 10-15 minutes of the lesson are spent warming up - playing different scales (focusing on intonation), reviewing etudes, and doing bowing exercises.
After this, I work with the student on various pieces, either of their own choosing or from a book, emphasizing the use of proper technique, intonation, and rhythmic accuracy to develop good habits with the student.
